Once upon a time If you were  thinking about  some form of adult learning or adult education,  whether to develop your skills and talents, learn something new  or just for fun, you would find lots of exciting options available. How times have changed!

Every year I research information on Adult Education courses  available locally and have previously been amazed at the  number and range of subjects on offer …………..not so this year! There is a significant drop in the number of courses and range of subjects offered. Subjects noticeable absent this year include:  Cookery, Genealogy, Holistic Therapies, Music Needle skills                                                 Need help? Courses for adults generally start after the kids are back at school /college but it is really important to book your place by enrolling as soon as you can. You can often enrol on line to have your place secure before the course starts. Check out the provider’s website (outlined below) for details. Courses can fill up quickly …………..or get cancelled if there is not enough demand!

The list below only covers college courses and not the many private providers, sports clubs, social groups etc. also offering courses.  If you want to travel further afield, you can go to college in a neighbouring town; you are not restricted to the area in which you live.

Access courses are offered by the main colleges and provide an alternative to ‘A’ levels for mature students. The range of subjects covered in Stockport includes: Business Management, Business/Law, Digital media/Technology, Education, Engineering, Health Science, Human Biology,  Nursing & Midwifery, Psychology (Health & Social Science), Sports Science

Cost: It is highly likely that you will have to pay for your course, as colleges have to cover costs to survive. If you are on a low-income benefit, you may get a reduction or a free course but this depends on a range of criteria, so you need to check for each course/college and can’t assume any chosen course will automatically be free.

An alternative to paying for a college course is to consider a free online course. Checkout the range of free On Line Courses
